A brave zebra kicked a lioness in the face after the predator ambushed it.

Brian Tira was leading a tour in Maasai Mara, Kenya, on February 11 when he spotted a big cat lying in wait as a herd of zebra crossed a river.

Dramatic footage – viewed more than 3.9million times – captured the moment the lion leaped on to its unsuspecting prey that had just walked straight into trouble.

Having heroically resisted being dragged to the ground, the zebra then lashed out with its hooves, eventually creating enough safety to escape from the lion.

If the lion had brought its prey down, the whole pride would have been able to feast.”

Brian said: “This zebra was very heroic. The lioness had been lying in wait patiently in the thicket for the herd to cross.

“If the lion had brought its prey down, the whole pride would have been able to feast.

“I have been a guide for six years and this was only the second time I had seen a lioness ambush zebras crossing the Mara River. It is always dramatic.”
