PROTECTIVE HIPPO MUM FLIPS CONSERVATIONIST’S BOAT

A protective hippo mum flipped a conservationist’s boat with him inside.
Zander Pienaar from Parawild Edu-Capture was working to relocate two wild hippos from Zandspruit Aero Estate, South Africa, on February 17 when the exercise took a crazy turn.
Dramatic footage captured the moment the massive momma suddenly burst through the water and used its nose to turn the boat over in a flash.
Fortunately Zander was quickly able to climb on to his overturned boat and his nearby family helped pull him to safety on their support vessel.
“Fortunately, once the hippo returned to her calf, the situation de-escalated, and we were able to recover both Zander and the boat safely.”
Markus Pienaar
Zander’s brother Markus said: “When the boat was struck and Zander was thrown overboard, my father reacted immediately. He drew his firearm as a precaution to protect human life if necessary.
“Human safety always comes first, although our priority is always to relocate animals safely without harm.
“We knew that entering the water would only escalate the situation and potentially provoke the hippo further.
“The best course of action was to remain steady and allow Zander to climb out himself, which he did successfully.
“Fortunately, once the hippo returned to her calf, the situation de-escalated, and we were able to recover both Zander and the boat safely.
“Fortunately, there were no injuries. He was thrown into the water but was able to climb back onto the boat on his own.
“There were no major damages to the vessel, and he was completely unscathed, apart from the intensity of the experience itself.”
The hippos had been washed on to the estate following heavy flooding in the area.
Markus said: “They had been displaced from their home, and due to safety concerns for residents, we were tasked with relocating them.
“It was a defensive reaction from a mother protecting her calf.
“When we initially approached, we knew it was a large female cow with a young calf, but we could not determine the calf’s exact age.
“After the incident, it became clear that the calf was very young, which explains the extreme level of protectiveness.
“Although we take great care not to provoke animals and had anchored ourselves in the middle of the dam, once she felt we had crossed her threshold, she reacted.
“Every hippo has a different temperament, much like domestic animals of the same breed.
“We have relocated hippos for decades and are familiar with defensive behaviour, but in this case the level of aggression escalated faster than anticipated.
“ParaWild has been operating in the wildlife capture and relocation industry for approximately 35 years.
“We specialise in large animal relocation and have worked extensively with veterinarians.
“For the past 20 years, we have also hosted biology and veterinary students from universities in the United States for practical wildlife training.”
