EPIC MOMENT LONE LION FIGHTS OFF 30 HYENAS RIGHT NEXT TO SAFARI TOUR

1–2 minutes

This is the epic moment a lone lion fought off 30 hyenas right next to a safari tour.

Robert Sobrepena was on a drive through the Masai Mara, Kenya, when his tour was treated to a battle of mammoth proportions.

Dramatic footage captured a confident male charge between two jeeps before pouncing on a single hyena.

As the lion continued its attack, the rest of the pack snapped aggressively at its tail to try and deter the relentless attack, before the ‘king of the jungle’ lifted the limp carcass ‘like a trophy’.

Robert, from San Francisco, California, USA, said: “I was amazed and in awe at what we were witnessing. I thought the lion would surely be overcome by the hyenas.

“I couldn’t believe we were lucky enough to witness such a fierce battle on our first safari in Kenya.

“All of us present, were completely engrossed and transfixed at the spectacle unfolding in front of us.

“Our guide Solomon also told me that in his 31 years of doing safaris, he had never seen anything like this.

“The actual fight lasted around nine minutes. There was the first battle where the lion seriously injured one of the hyenas after which, the pack surrounded him and starred barking and threatening him.

“It was apparently an attempt by the other hyenas to save the injured one who could no longer defend itself.

“After a few more battles and encounters with the pack, the lion proceeded to move towards the injured hyena to go in for the kill.

“The lion vigorously defended itself and injured one or two more of the attacking hyenas.

“Eventually, the lion picked up the dead hyena then lifted it to show the whole pack its carcass, as if it was holding a trophy for all to see.

“The lion had wounds on his face and body. He actually sat there and liked his wounds for a while after the fight.”
