BUFFALO HERD SAVE FRIEND FROM HAVING LEG CHEWED OFF BY LION
A buffalo herd saved their friend from having its leg chewed off by a lion.
Johan Smalman was leading a tour through Timbavati Private Nature Reserve, South Africa, when he found a predator in action.
Dramatic footage captured a lion with its jaws clamped tightly around the back leg of an unfortunate buffalo while they were both in a water hole.
Fortunately for the buffalo, the rest of the herd arrived to chase the lion away and save it from becoming dinner.
Johan said: “This male lion – known as the Lillydale male – had been trailing this buffalo herd for about a day.
“We could see he was starting to get a bit thin and needed to hunt. Taking a buffalo down is what he specializes in. Big risk but big reward.
“It’s always a 50/50 percent chance if the buffalo will come back and help. In a situation like this it’s difficult to only have one reaction or emotion.
“On one hand you want the lion the hunt and eat so that he can live. Then on the other hand you want the buffalo to survive too.
“I always try and take the human emotion out of the situation.”
