ANTIHERO-N: LIGHTNING FAST HERON CATCHES UNSUSPECTING DOVE BEFORE DROWNING POOR BIRD

1–2 minutes

A lightning fast heron caught an unsuspecting dove before drowning it in nearby water.

Jannette Kotze was at Mapungubwe National Park, South Africa, in March when she spotted a huge bird hunting some smaller prey.

Dramatic footage captured the moment the heron shot its massive beak and snatched an unlucky dove from the mud.

After carrying it to the water, the heron dunked its poor prey under the surface to drown the bird before swallowing it whole.

Jannette said: “I honestly thought there was no way the heron would be able to swallow the dove.

“The heron approached very fast as the doves came in for a drink and to our surprise caught a dove.

“It then went to the water, placed the dove into the water and picked it up a couple of times, after 20 minutes manage to swallow the dove whole.”
